While tablets are flexible, they also have disadvantages: high power consumption, distractions from other apps, and often an excessive range of functions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">A <strong>E-Ink display for Home Assistant<\/strong> This offers clear advantages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">extremely low energy consumption<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">very good readability<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">calm, minimalist appearance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hardware: ESP32, E-Ink and 3D printing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The hardware is based on a <strong>ESP32 E-Ink touchscreen<\/strong>, for example <em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3NP3x61\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3NP3x61\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LilyGo T5 E-Paper S3 Pro<\/a><\/em>* or a <em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3O2YgYq\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3O2YgYq\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">M5Stack M5Paper S3<\/a><\/em>*. These devices combine ESP32 with Wi-Fi, a touchscreen, and an e-paper display.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">This makes them ideally suited as <strong>Home Assistant Client<\/strong> without additional hardware. The wall mount is attached via <strong>3D printing<\/strong> It is manufactured and designed so that the USB cable disappears invisibly. This gives the device a high-quality look and allows it to integrate seamlessly into the living space. The required <a href=\"https:\/\/www.printables.com\/model\/1576382-wall-mount-for-m5-papers3\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.printables.com\/model\/1576382-wall-mount-for-m5-papers3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">3D model<\/a> Detailed instructions are also available for download. <strong>Home Assistant Integration<\/strong> and the necessary software libraries are on <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ugomeda\/home-assistant-epaper-remote\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ugomeda\/home-assistant-epaper-remote\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GitHub <\/a>documented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Direct Home Assistant connection via WebSocket<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The following is particularly interesting from a technical point of view: <strong>Direct integration with Home Assistant via the WebSocket API<\/strong>. The E-Ink Remote communicates directly with the Home Assistant instance without additional middleware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">This allows, among other things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Control lights and switches<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Activate Home Assistant scenes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Display sensor and status information<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Changes are transmitted almost in real time. The user interface is specifically optimized for E-Ink. In the current implementation, the integrated battery lasts approximately... <strong>one day<\/strong>, if the device is permanently online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In practice, the <strong>Home Assistant remote controls are therefore usually permanently powered via USB.<\/strong>. The community is actively discussing optimizations \u2013 we are excited to see upcoming improvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion: E-Ink as an alternative to the home assistant tablet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">This project is not a full replacement for a <strong>Home Assistant dashboard on the tablet<\/strong> \u2013 and that is precisely where its strength lies. It is a <strong>specialized control<\/strong>, reduced to the essentials and ideal for fixed functions such as light, scenes or status indicators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">For hobbyists, this project offers an exciting glimpse into alternative operating concepts. The solution is not yet fully developed, but it impressively demonstrates its potential. <strong>E-ink displays with home assistant<\/strong> have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
