The SwitchBot Plug Mini is a compact Matter smart plug that integrates conventional household appliances into a smart home system. It is aimed primarily at beginners and price-conscious users, and even undercuts the recently introduced IKEA GRILLPLATS smart plug.
While the IKEA smart plug currently costs around €8.99, the SwitchBot Plug Mini* is already available from approximately €8.49.
The Plug Mini is simply inserted between the wall outlet and the appliance, allowing connected devices to be switched using the app, schedules or voice commands. Its compact design does not block neighboring outlets, making it suitable for use in power strips.
Matter for cross-platform use
A key feature of the Plug Mini is its support for the Matter standard (Matter over Wi-Fi). Matter is designed to reduce fragmentation in the smart home and make devices from different manufacturers compatible with one another.
This allows the Plug Mini to integrate directly with popular platforms such as Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa and Home Assistant, where it can be controlled centrally.
This offers users several advantages. Setup is generally straightforward using a QR code, devices can be used across platforms and dependence on individual manufacturers is reduced. Matter also places greater emphasis on local communication, improving both response times and control over personal data.
Integrated Matter bridge
A special feature of the Plug Mini is its additional bridge function. The smart plug can add Bluetooth devices from the SwitchBot ecosystem to a Matter network. In practical terms, devices without native Matter support can be integrated indirectly into platforms such as Apple Home or Alexa through the Plug Mini. This concept is familiar from traditional hubs, but is implemented here in a much more compact form.
This provides clear added value for users who already own SwitchBot devices, because existing hardware can continue to be used and integrated into modern systems.
Measure and optimize energy consumption
Another important feature is integrated power monitoring. The Plug Mini continuously records the electricity consumption of connected devices and presents the data clearly. Users receive real-time readings of current consumption in watts, cumulative consumption data in kilowatt-hours and historical statistics covering days, months or years.
This information enables a targeted analysis of household energy use. Devices with high standby consumption can be identified, for example, and usage patterns that could be optimized become visible.
Compact design: Ideal for power strips
A practical advantage is the compact design. The Plug Mini does not block neighboring outlets and is therefore particularly suitable for power strips.
The smart plug is designed for everyday use with up to 16 amps and a maximum output of approximately 3,840 watts.
Additional safety features such as overload and overheat protection ensure safe operation.
