No neutral wire in the switch box—and smart lighting control in older buildings quickly becomes complicated. This is exactly where the new Homematic IP Universal Dimmer Insert comes in. The flush-mounted actuator works either with or without a neutral wire, automatically detects the appropriate dimming method and can be controlled via a push-button, app or automation.
The combination of conventional operation and smart home functions is particularly practical: the light can still be used from the wall switch, but it can also be controlled via the app, a schedule or together with other devices.
The Universal Dimmer Insert, which was previously announced as one of the new Homematic IP products for 2026, is now available to order.
Why the Homematic IP Universal Dimmer Insert is so interesting
In older buildings, switch boxes often contain only two wires. Many smart flush-mounted actuators cannot be installed there without additional wiring. The HmIP-UDI, however, can also be operated without a neutral wire, making it particularly suitable for retrofitting existing electrical installations.
The Homematic IP Universal Dimmer supports leading-edge and trailing-edge phase control. After it is switched on, it detects the connected load and automatically selects the appropriate dimming method. It is suitable for common dimmable LED bulbs, incandescent bulbs, high-voltage halogen lamps and low-voltage halogen lamps with an electronic transformer.
The maximum load is 200 VA. With a neutral wire, Homematic IP specifies a power range of 2 to 200 watts; without a neutral wire, the range is 20 to 200 watts. The minimum load should therefore be checked before purchase, especially when using a single, energy-efficient LED bulb.
Operation via push-button or motion detector
A compatible front module is also required for operation. Two variants are available in white and anthracite:
- Push-button module: A short press switches the light on or off, while pressing and holding adjusts the brightness.
- Motion detector module: Combines two buttons with a motion and twilight sensor. It detects movement at a distance of up to twelve metres and within a horizontal angle of 120 degrees.

Prices for the Homematic IP Universal Dimmer Insert
According to the manufacturer, the Homematic IP dimmer insert costs €59.95. One of the separately available front modules must be added. The least expensive complete combination therefore costs €99.90.

Smart control in everyday use
Once integrated into the Homematic IP system, the lighting can be controlled through the free app, time profiles, groups and automations. The living-room light can, for example, be dimmed automatically in the evening, or the hallway lighting can be switched on depending on movement and ambient brightness.

Installation by a qualified electrician only
The Homematic IP flush-mounted dimmer is connected directly to a 230-volt supply. It must therefore be installed and tested by a qualified electrician. The wiring, switch box and connected light source, among other things, must be checked beforehand. Anyone who does not want to modify a flush-mounted installation can instead use a Homematic IP dimmer plug with a suitable floor or table lamp.
Conclusion on the Homematic IP Universal Dimmer Insert
The Homematic IP Universal Dimmer Insert solves a common problem when retrofitting or building a smart home system: it also works in switch boxes without a neutral wire. Automatic dimming-method detection, the extension input and the choice between a push-button and motion detector make it flexible to use. At a minimum of €99.90 for the insert and front module, however, the solution is not particularly inexpensive.
