IKEA Timmerflotte in a practical test: IKEA’s new temperature and humidity sensor is currently one of the most affordable smart home sensors with Matter support. I tested the sensor in everyday use to see how easy the IKEA Timmerflotte is to set up, how reliably it measures temperature and humidity, and how well it works in smart home automations.

What is the IKEA Timmerflotte?
The recently introduced IKEA Timmerflotte is a compact temperature and humidity sensor that communicates via Matter over Thread. IKEA clearly positions it as an affordable entry point for cross-platform sensing.

Key technical specifications:
- Measures temperature and relative humidity
- Wireless standard: Matter (Thread)
- Powered by 2 × AAA batteries
- Integrated display for showing measured values
- Significantly less expensive than comparable sensors
Setup and installation with a Matter hub
Operation requires a Matter-compatible hub with a Thread Border Router, such as an Apple HomePod mini, Apple TV, Google Nest Hub, Homey, or SmartThings. For this test, I used an Aqara Smart Hub M200.

Setting up the IKEA Timmerflotte in the test:

To set up the IKEA Timmerflotte, the bottom cover must first be opened with a screwdriver. It requires two AAA batteries or rechargeable AAA batteries, which are not included.

12-pack of rechargeable AAA NiMH batteries
high capacity, 850 mAh, 1.2 V, rechargeable up to 500 times, pre-charged
- After inserting the batteries, the sensor automatically enters pairing mode. In this state, the Timmerflotte can be connected to a Matter-compatible hub.
- Active pairing mode is clearly indicated by the sensor’s flashing status indicator.
- In the Aqara app, select “Add Matter device” and scan the Matter code on the back of the sensor
- Select a room, rename the temperature and humidity readings if required, and complete the setup

Once the sensor has been added to the Aqara app, it is ready to use and starts transmitting temperature and humidity readings.
The setup was quick and stable. A positive aspect is that the Timmerflotte can be integrated without the IKEA app or an IKEA gateway directly into an existing system.

IKEA Timmerflotte test: functions and features
The sensor continuously measures room temperature and relative humidity. The measured values can be shown on the display at the press of a button; otherwise, the display remains off. They are also permanently available in the relevant smart home app.

Compared with reference sensors, the measured values appeared realistic and stable. The update rate is sufficient for typical applications. The design is simple and functional, and the plastic housing is entirely appropriate for the price.

The configuration options in the IKEA Timmerflotte device card within the Aqara app are fairly limited. It displays the battery level and the current temperature and humidity readings.
You can also customize the icons shown for the device and change its location or room assignment. However, the Aqara app does not provide a graph showing the Timmerflotte readings over time.

Conclusion: How good is the IKEA Timmerflotte in practice?
In practical testing, the IKEA Timmerflotte proved to be a surprisingly solid Matter sensor with a very attractive price-to-performance ratio. Its vendor-independent integration without an additional gateway is a particular strength.
