With the KLIPPBOK water leak sensor, IKEA expands its portfolio with a small but highly useful safety device. The sensor detects leaking water early and uses the open standard Matter. KLIPPBOK is aimed specifically at users of open platforms such as Home Assistant, while also being compatible with common systems from Amazon, Apple, Google, Homey and Samsung.
KLIPPBOK Water Leak Sensor in Detail
KLIPPBOK is a compact sensor that detects water via two contacts on its underside. As soon as it detects moisture, it triggers a local alarm and reports the event to the connected smart home system. Its low profile makes it especially suitable for tight spaces, such as under kitchen cabinets or behind household appliances.

The sensor is battery-powered and designed for efficient continuous operation. It therefore works unobtrusively in the background for long periods with little maintenance—an important characteristic for safety devices.
Why a Water Leak Sensor Is Essential at Home
A water leak sensor is important at home because water damage is among the most common and expensive types of damage. Leaks often develop gradually in hard-to-see places such as under sinks, behind washing machines or in basements. Without early detection, escaping water can cause unnoticed damage for hours or days. Even small amounts can permanently damage floors, furniture, walls or the building structure. The risk of mold also increases, creating both financial and health concerns. Water damage is especially critical during longer absences, such as vacations or working hours.

A water leak sensor acts as a permanent early-warning system in the background. It reports moisture immediately and enables quick action before major damage occurs. Connected to a smart home system, it can trigger automatic notifications, alarms and other automations. This is where a connected sensor such as KLIPPBOK shows its strengths.
IKEA KLIPPBOK and Matter Compatibility
KLIPPBOK is based entirely on the open Matter standard and is therefore compatible with several smart home platforms, including Amazon Alexa, Apple Home, Google Home, Homey and Samsung SmartThings. Matter keeps the sensor flexible and future-proof.
In our scenario, the sensor is integrated with Home Assistant. This requires a suitable hub with Matter support or a Thread Border Router. We recently introduced the Echo Show 8, which supports Zigbee, Matter as well as Thread in the role of a border router.
Requirements for Integration with Home Assistant
For seamless integration, the following requirements must be met:
- A current version of Home Assistant on suitable hardware, for example:
- A working Thread Border Router, for example:
- IKEA KLIPPBOK with 2 inserted AAA rechargeable batteries*
- Matter QR code or numerical pairing code printed on the front of the manual and on the side of the sensor.
Setting Up KLIPPBOK in Home Assistant
Matter devices are currently added through the Home Assistant Companion app on a smartphone. After the batteries are inserted, the sensor starts automatically and remains in pairing mode for 15 minutes. This period restarts when the batteries are briefly removed. If the sensor has already been paired with another system, it can be reset using a button inside the battery compartment.
Step-by-Step Guide
- In the app: Settings → Devices & services → Add integration → Add Matter device
- Select “New” and scan the QR code or enter the pairing code manually
- The sensor is added to the Thread border router and the Thread network
After a few seconds, KLIPPBOK appears as a new device in Home Assistant.
KLIPPBOK in Home Assistant: Features and Data
The device information shows the firmware version, hardware version and connection type (Matter). The sensor overview indicates whether a water leak has been detected, using the states Dry or Wet.

The diagnostics section provides the battery level, battery voltage and battery type (AAA). An identify function is also available and lights the sensor’s status LED. The sensor can be used directly in automations, scenes and scripts, whose activities are displayed clearly as well.
Test: Automations with KLIPPBOK
In practice, an automation is quick to create: if the sensor detects water and changes to “Wet,” Home Assistant sends a notification such as “Water leak detected.”
In a test beside a basement washing machine, KLIPPBOK demonstrates its strengths. On contact with water, a loud acoustic alarm sounds and the status LED flashes red. The volume is sufficient to draw attention to the problem even without a smart home connection. When nobody is home, the smartphone notification usefully complements the local warning.

Conclusion: Small Investment, Major Protection
The IKEA KLIPPBOK water leak sensor demonstrates how useful simple smart home devices can be. It combines a clear purpose with modern technology such as Matter and integrates smoothly with Home Assistant. As a preventive measure against possible water damage, it is a worthwhile addition to any household. Anyone operating an open, local and future-proof smart home gets an affordable yet powerful safety component with KLIPPBOK.
