Home Assistant 2026.8.1: Hotfix to resolve issues

Home Assistant receives regular, substantial monthly updates. These bring new features, but major changes can also cause unexpected problems. This appears to be exactly what happened with Home Assistant 2026.8: After installation, our system was no longer accessible.

Home Assistant remains unreachable after the update

Home Assistant 2026.8 was released on August 5, 2026. One of the major changes concerns the integrated web server. The HTTP configuration, previously managed partly via YAML, has been moved to the user interface. New installations of Home Assistant OS also use port 80 by default instead of port 8123. After the update, our Home Assistant installation could no longer be accessed via the usual address. The web interface, and therefore the login page, was inaccessible.

A user describes a similar error pattern in a recent thread. Reddit post. Access to Home Assistant was only possible sporadically after the update to version 2026.8. Sometimes the IP address could not be found, and in other cases the request timed out.

Other users report similar difficulties in the comments. However, some were able to install Home Assistant 2026.8 without any problems. Apparently, not all systems are affected.

Restoring from a backup

Since the user interface was no longer accessible, troubleshooting proved difficult. Various checks failed to resolve the issue on our installation. In the end, the only option was to restore a previously created backup.

After restoring the backup and reverting to the previous version, Home Assistant was accessible again. Several users in the Reddit discussion also recommend restoring from a working backup.

This incident once again demonstrates the importance of regular backups for Home Assistant. A current backup should be created, especially before installing a major monthly update. Please do not store this backup locally on the Home Assistant system, but also save it to a NAS, a network drive, or cloud storage.

The official documentation also recommends storing backups outside the actual system. This is the only way to ensure the backup remains available if the installation itself becomes inaccessible or the storage medium fails.

Conclusion: Not every update needs to be installed immediately.

Home Assistant released version 2026.8.1, the first hotfix for release 2026.8, on August 7th. After updating to this version, the problem has not recurred in our installation. Home Assistant is now accessible as usual.

New versions of Home Assistant regularly bring new features. However, the current case shows that it can be worthwhile not to install major monthly updates immediately after their release.

Especially with systems in production, it can be advisable to wait for the first hotfix. Many minor bugs are fixed within a few days of a new release.

Anyone who still wants to update early should definitely create a current backup stored externally beforehand. This way, Home Assistant can be quickly restored to a working state in case of an emergency.
