Navimow i105E vs. i205 AWD: Key Differences Compared

In 2024, Segway introduced the Navimow i105E, one of the most compelling entry-level robotic lawnmowers without a boundary wire. Its value for money, simple installation and reliable navigation quickly made it popular. The i205 AWD is now available as a successor with significantly improved technology. At first glance, both models look similar. Technically, however, the Navimow i105E and the new i205 AWD differ in several important areas – from the chassis and navigation to maintenance.

The i105E: A strong entry into wire-free robotic mowing

I personally use a Navimow i105E and am impressed by the robotic lawnmower. Its reliable navigation, good obstacle detection and simple setup without a boundary wire are particularly convincing. Despite its comparatively low price, it works with surprising precision in everyday use and has a powerful cutting system. The i105E is clearly designed for small to medium-sized properties with fairly simple garden layouts and slopes.

Front-wheel drive versus all-wheel drive

The biggest difference between the two models lies in the chassis. While the Navimow i105E uses conventional front-wheel drive and simply pulls the two rear wheels along, the new i205 AWD has all-wheel drive with a powered and steerable rear axle.

This significantly improves traction, especially on wet ground, uneven surfaces and slopes. Segway specifies a maximum gradient of 30% for the i105E. With the i205 AWD, this value rises to as much as 45%. That is a noticeable advantage on sloping or difficult properties. The i205 AWD also uses Xero-Turn technology for more precise turning manoeuvres.

Navigation: RTK remains, but becomes more flexible

The two models also differ significantly in their navigation systems. The i105E uses EFLS 2.0 and a conventional external RTK antenna. This antenna is required for precise positioning and is an integral part of the system.

For the new i205 AWD, Segway instead relies on EFLS NRTK (“Network RTK”). By default, correction data is transmitted via the mobile network. This means that the robotic lawnmower can generally operate without a locally installed RTK antenna.

A GNSS/RTK antenna is nevertheless still included with the i205 AWD and can be used as an option, for example in difficult reception conditions or where mobile coverage is limited. This gives the i205 AWD a more flexible navigation solution than the i105E.

Differences in the mowing system

The actual cutting systems differ more than you might initially expect. Both the Navimow i105E and the i205 AWD use a floating blade disc with freely moving blades and a cutting width of 18 cm. However, Segway equips the i105E with three blades, while the new i205 AWD uses five blades.

The greater number of blades can cut more grass during each pass. This produces a finer cutting pattern and distributes the clippings more evenly across the lawn, improving the mulching effect.

Accessory manufacturers now also offer alternative blade discs for the i105E with a greater number of blades. Some use five or more blades. However, these systems are not part of Segway’s official product range.

Maintenance and battery replacement

Another interesting difference concerns maintenance. The Navimow i105 user manual describes battery replacement as a task for professional technicians or customer service. Direct replacement by the user is not provided for.

For the new i205 AWD, Segway documents battery removal directly in the user manual. It explains how to open the battery compartment, disconnect the plugs and replace the battery. This is an important difference between the two model generations, especially with regard to long-term maintenance and repairs.

Technical comparison

Conclusion

The Navimow i205 AWD is technically much more than a simple evolution of the i105E. Its all-wheel drive, more flexible Network RTK navigation and documented battery maintenance options clearly distinguish it from its predecessor. The i105E remains an attractive robotic lawnmower for smaller, less complex properties. However, anyone dealing with steeper slopes, difficult terrain or looking for a more modern platform will find the i205 AWD to be the technically more capable solution.
