Aqara P100 multifunctional sensor for doors, windows and object monitoring now available

Aqara

With the Aqara P100 multi-function sensor, Aqara is launching a new, versatile sensor that significantly expands the capabilities of traditional door/window contacts. Instead of simply detecting open/closed states, the device combines multiple sensor technologies, enabling it to recognize the sensor's orientation within the room, detect movement, and even identify slight vibrations. This makes the P100 ideal for versatile object monitoring and automation.

Concept: More than a classic door/window contact

The Aqara P100 takes a different approach than conventional door/window contacts. While classic models usually consist of two components (sensor + magnet) or optically determine the open/closed status, Aqara relies on a compact design with integrated sensors.

At its core, the sensor uses a combination of accelerometer, gyroscope, and geomagnetic sensor. This allows it to detect significantly more states than just "open" or "closed." For example, the sensor can also detect knocking and react accordingly.

The supported events in the "Object Monitoring" operating mode include, among others:

  • Opening and closing doors and windows
  • Movements and changes in position
  • Vibrations, knocking or shocks
  • Tilting and falling movements

Two operating modes for different application scenarios

For optimal detection, the Aqara P100 can be configured in two operating modes, in which the combination of sensors is evaluated and displayed accordingly. Both modes cannot be active simultaneously, but can be switched between them as needed.

Aqara P100 operating modes: Open/close monitoring and object protection

1. Open/Close Monitoring
In this mode, the P100 functions similarly to a classic door/window contact. It reliably detects whether, for example, a front door, a window, or even a refrigerator is opened or closed.

2. Property protection
Here the sensor demonstrates its advanced capabilities: It detects movements, tilts, or vibrations of objects – such as drawers, mailboxes, or valuables. It detects strong vibrations, e.g., from broken glass, and provides early warnings of a break-in. This mode is only available via Zigbee and a Aqara Hub* available.

Smart applications in everyday life

The enhanced sensor technology opens up a wide range of application scenarios that go beyond classic safety functions:

  • Burglary protection: Detection of door openings or unusual vibrations
  • Mailbox tracking: Notification of incoming mail
  • Drawer or safe monitoring: Real-time access detection
  • Balcony door/Energy saving: Detect when a door is open and switch off the heating or air conditioning accordingly.

In addition, the sensor logs all events and displays them visually in the app, allowing usage patterns to be analyzed.

Smart home integration with Matter over Thread or Zigbee

The Aqara P100 supports modern standards like Thread and Zigbee, making it widely applicable. Matter compatibility enables cross-platform integration with systems such as Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Samsung SmartThings, and more. Home Assistant possible.

Aqara P100 Overview of features for Zigbee and Thread

However, there is a limitation: While basic functions can be used via thread, advanced features (e.g., object protection) are tied to a dedicated thread. Aqara Hub* and the use of the Aqara Home app. Only open/close detection is available via Thread. Other functions associated with object protection mode are either completely missing or only partially available.

Hardware and technology overview

Technically, the sensor relies on extensive features including:

  • 9-axis sensor system (acceleration, gyroscope, magnetic field)
  • Battery operation (CR2450) with a runtime of several years depending on the protocol
  • Compact design with easy adhesive mounting
  • Operating temperature range from -10 to +55 °C
  • Integrated calibration and algorithmic evaluation to reduce false alarms and for more precise results

Things to consider when placing the sensor: The P100 is intended for indoor use only and should not be exposed to direct rain.

Conclusion

With the P100 multi-function sensor, Aqara delivers an exciting evolution of classic door and window sensors. The combination of multiple sensor types and flexible application options provides real added value in the smart home.

However, a clear limitation is also apparent: The modern integration via Matter over Thread cannot currently fully realize its potential, as only a subset of the functions are available. Those who, however, use the P100 via a Aqara Hub* and those who use Aqara Home via Zigbee receive the full range of functions – and thus a significantly more versatile overall package.

For users who deliberately rely on threads, the MYGGBETT from IKEA that would be the more sensible and also cheaper choice.

In summary, the Aqara P100 is an interesting and versatile sensor that truly shines within the Aqara ecosystem. The recommended retail price is €29.99, and it is available in white and grey.
