Aqara P100 multifunction sensor for doors, windows and object monitoring now available

Instead of merely detecting open/closed states, the device combines multiple sensor technologies to recognize its orientation in space when moved, and even detects slight vibrations. This makes the P100 suitable for a wide range of object monitoring and automation tasks.

Concept: More than just a classic door/window contact

The Aqara P100 takes a different approach than conventional door/window contacts. While classic models usually consist of two components (sensor + magnet) or detect the open/closed state optically, Aqara opts for a compact design with integrated sensors.

Supported events in „Object Monitoring“ mode include, among others:

• Opening and closing of doors and windows
• Movement and changes in position
• Vibrations, knocking, or impacts
• Tilting and falling movements

Two operating modes for different use cases

To ensure optimal detection, the Aqara P100 can be configured in two operating modes, each utilizing a specific combination of sensors for analysis and reporting. The two modes cannot be active simultaneously, but the device can be switched between them as needed.

1. Open/Close Monitoring: In this mode, the P100 functions similarly to a standard door/window contact sensor. It reliably detects when an object—such as a front door, window, or even a refrigerator—is opened or closed.

2. Object Protection: This is where the sensor demonstrates its advanced capabilities: it detects movement, tilting, or vibrations affecting objects—such as drawers, mailboxes, or valuables. It detects strong vibrations, such as those caused by glass breakage, providing early warnings of a potential break-in. This mode is available only via Zigbee and an Aqara Hub*.

Smart everyday use cases

Its advanced sensor technology enables a wide range of applications that go beyond standard security functions:

• Burglary protection: Detection of door openings or unusual vibrations
• Mailbox tracking: Notifications for incoming mail
• Drawer or safe monitoring: Real-time access detection
• Balcony door/Energy saving: Detection of open doors to automatically turn off heating or air conditioning

Additionally, the sensor logs all events and displays them visually in the app, allowing for the analysis of usage patterns.

Smart home integration via Matter over Thread or Zigbee

The Aqara P100 supports modern standards like Thread and Zigbee, ensuring broad compatibility. Matter support enables cross-platform integration with systems such as Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Samsung SmartThings, and Home Assistant.

However, there is a limitation here: while basic functions are available via Thread, advanced features (e.g., object protection) are tied to an Aqara Hub* and the use of the Aqara Home app. Only open/close detection is available via Thread; other functions associated with the object protection mode are either completely missing or only partially available.

Hardware and technical specifications at a glance

From a technical standpoint, the sensor boasts an extensive feature set, including:

• 9-axis sensor system (accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer)
• Battery operation (CR2450) with a multi-year lifespan, depending on the protocol
• Compact design with simple adhesive mounting
• Operating temperature range of -10 to +55°C
• Integrated calibration and algorithmic analysis to reduce false alarms and ensure more precise results

Important note on sensor placement: The P100 is designed exclusively for indoor use and should not be exposed to direct rain.

Conclusion

With the P100 multifunction sensor, Aqara delivers an exciting evolution of classic door and window sensors. The combination of multiple sensor types and flexible application options adds genuine value to the smart home.

However, there is a clear limitation: modern integration via Matter over Thread cannot currently fully realize its potential, as only a subset of functions is available. Conversely, using the P100 via an Aqara Hub* and the Aqara Home app (using Zigbee) unlocks the full range of features—resulting in a significantly more versatile overall package.

For users specifically opting for Thread, IKEA’s MYGGBETT might be the more sensible—and more affordable—choice.
