IKEA MYGGBETT: How to Make the Door and Window Sensor Invisible

The IKEA MYGGBETT is one of the most affordable door and window sensors with Matter support. A user has now shown on Reddit how the sensor can be installed almost invisibly in a window. This requires removing the original housing and replacing it with a particularly slim 3D-printed mount.

DIY mount instead of the original housing

In its original form, the MYGGBETT is visibly attached to the window sash and frame. For this alternative installation, the Reddit user removed the circuit board from the plastic housing and placed it together with the AAA battery in a custom-designed mount.

According to its creator, the new mount requires a free space around 76.7 millimeters long and at least 11.8 millimeters wide. For comparison, the original housing is approximately 81.5 millimeters long and 17 millimeters wide. The key challenge was therefore reducing the width to less than twelve millimeters.

The assembly is installed on the hinge side of a tilt-and-turn window. The window frame does not need to be drilled or modified in any other way. When the window is closed, the sensor is no longer visible.

Detection also works when the window is tilted

According to the developer, detection also works when the window is tilted. However, the MYGGBETT still only reports whether the contact is open or closed. The magnet must be attached to the opposite side for this to work.

With two sensors positioned differently, Home Assistant could theoretically distinguish between a tilted and a fully open window. This would require suitable installation and a custom automation. Such a distinction is not part of the sensor’s standard functionality.

Modification is at your own risk

IKEA does not intend the MYGGBETT to be installed in this concealed manner. Before installation, you must therefore check carefully whether there is enough space in the window concerned. When closing, the window must not exert pressure on the circuit board, battery or mount.

Particular care is also required around the battery contacts to prevent a short circuit between the positive and negative terminals. The exposed electronics must also be protected from moisture and mechanical stress. The corresponding print file and modification instructions have been published on MakerWorld.
