With Home Assistant 2026.3, the open-source platform has released its monthly update. The new version brings several practical improvements for automations, energy monitoring and voice control. Highlights include a new feature for robot vacuums, an expanded Energy Dashboard and experimental wake-word detection on Android smartphones.

What is Home Assistant?
Home Assistant is an open platform for smart home systems that lets users connect devices from many manufacturers locally and include them in automations. Examples include our articles about the new Matter devices from IKEA and the integration of the FRITZ! Smart Energy 250 for reading current electricity consumption.
New software versions are generally released on the first Wednesday of each month and regularly add new functions as well as improvements and optimizations to existing features.
Home Assistant 2026.3 – The Most Important New Features
1. Robot vacuums can clean specific rooms
One of the biggest new features in Home Assistant 2026.3 is the “Clean Area” action for compatible robot vacuums. It lets users send a robot to specific areas of the home instead of always starting a complete cleaning cycle. Supported devices include models using Matter as well as products from Roborock and Ecovacs. The feature uses existing room definitions in Home Assistant, eliminating the need for manufacturer-specific room IDs.
2. Energy Dashboard improvements
The Energy Dashboard has also been significantly expanded in version 2026.3. New fields display important consumption data directly in the overview, providing greater transparency into current resource use in the smart home. Electricity consumption, gas flow and water consumption can now be shown in real time. A new Sankey diagram for water consumption clearly visualizes distribution and usage. The settings have also been reorganized into separate tabs for electricity, gas and water.

3. More reliable automations with “Continue on error”
Home Assistant is especially well known for its powerful automations. The new version further improves their reliability. The “Continue on error” option is now available directly in the visual automation editor. This allows an automation to continue even if an individual action fails. For example, if a push notification cannot be sent, subsequent actions such as sending an email or switching on a light will still run.
4. Wake-word detection for Android (experimental)
Another highlight of the update is wake-word detection in the Home Assistant Android app. Assist can now be started directly with an activation phrase, even when the smartphone is locked. Voice processing takes place locally on the device, so no audio data has to be transferred to the cloud. This also allows the smartphone to serve as a voice satellite in the smart home and forward commands directly to Home Assistant. Because the microphone continuously listens for the wake word, battery consumption may increase. The feature is therefore currently marked as experimental.

Home Assistant 2026.3 does not introduce radical changes, but it does deliver many practical improvements for everyday smart home use.
